Afrikaburn

Afrikaburn is a week-long Burning Man event in the desert of Tankwa Karoo, South Africa. I spent a few days in one of my favorite cities, Cape Town, before heading to the desert to camp and photograph.

Kenya Safari

While living in Kenya for four months, I was able to go on three safaris to Meru National Park, Samburu National Reserve, and Hell’s Gate National Park. At Hell’s Gate we biked through the park among all of the animals and took a hike through a slot canyon that was the inspiration for the wildebeest stampede scenery in The Lion King. It start pouring rain during our climb out of the canyon and the bike paths were flooded in water up to our thighs on the route back. We had to get back to Nairobi so we trudged through anyway. It was an unforgettable day.

Kenya

In 2011, I spent four months working in Meru, Kenya for a small nonprofit, the Miriam Kanana Mubichi Foundation. I got to take on a number of responsibilities and projects and my favorite experiences were the times I spent teaching health and art classes to primary school students, researching malnutrition in a local hospital, and volunteering at a SOS Kindergarten.  While there I lived with a four year old sister, her dog Fluffy, and her grandfather.

South Africa

I couldn’t help but fall in love with South Africa.  Everything about it was beautiful–the languages, the people, the city, the food.  It was like no where I had ever been before.  The following photos were taken over two month-long trips to Cape Town and Durban, South Africa.  I know I’ll make it back there again one  day.

Semester in France

In 2010 I spent four months studying at CEFAM in the beautiful city of Lyon, France.  The following photos were taken between there and short trips to Marseilles, Paris, Avignon, Strasbourg, and Trélou-sur-Marne.
